2022-2023 Annual Report

September 1, 2022 – August 31, 2023

Message from the Chief Executive Officer

During this reporting period, ASBA continued positioning itself as a leading organization, enhancing advocacy impact at local, provincial, and federal levels through engagement and cross-collaboration with stakeholders.

In particular, our efforts focused on the creation of tools and supports to empower member school boards in engaging with candidates during the provincial election—being mindful of local contexts—ensuring ongoing positive and effective government relations.

Additionally, high-quality professional learning and development was delivered both in-person and virtually for members through our Fall and Spring General Meetings, zones, The Learning Centre and our Speakers’ Corner series. Collectively, these opportunities provide a range of modalities to learn about timely and relevant topics. ASBA’s Trustee Governance Program bolstered foundational knowledge and skills, and our Education Consultants empowered members using a unique blend of industry experience, deep process understanding and extensive networks.

Nationally, ASBA demonstrated educational leadership by hosting its inaugural virtual learning opportunity on anti-racism education, reaching trustees and administrators nationwide. The 2023 CSBA Congress and National Trustee Gathering on Indigenous Education in Banff underscored our commitment to providing diverse educational priorities while also launching our first micro-credential—an initiative we look forward to continuing.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to executing our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, with an operational focus on establishing ASBA as a strategic and sustainable association, ensuring timely and relevant support for members.

I extend special thanks to our Indigenous Advisory Council, whose contributions have significantly shaped professional learning opportunities, events and awards. I continue to work diligently to live up to my gifted Blackfoot name Aah kah poi kah kii, which means “Many Children Clan Woman.”

These achievements owe much to the exceptional leadership of our President, Vice-president and entire Board of Directors. Equally crucial is the dedication of ASBA’s staff, whose innovation, determination, and mutual support drive the realization of our goals.

My thanks, of course, go to our members for their pivotal role in this incredible journey. I look forward to continuing to serve you and expanding our impact together.
