About ASBA

Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) is the provincial association supporting Alberta’s 61 locally elected public, catholic and francophone member school boards, and the four public and catholic boards from Yellowknife and Lloydminster.

Our members represent the needs of their local communities, whether urban, metro or rural.

ASBA builds the capacity of members including advice and training in leadership, professional development, governance and advocacy. As a provincial association, ASBA provides a balanced viewpoint and advocates on behalf of members to government and other stakeholders.

The result is unparalleled diversity and choice for Alberta families.

Truth and Reconciliation

ASBA is committed to responding to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, celebrating and recognizing Indigenous voices in Alberta, and honouring First Nations, Métis and Inuit families and communities. ASBA extends thanks to our Indigenous Advisory Council for their wisdom and contributions to ASBA work and initiatives over the past year.

It’s something we’ve been doing for over 116 years.

ASBA acknowledges the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. ASBA recognizes that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory for the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina Nations and the Métis People of Alberta. This acknowledgement respects Treaties 6, 7 and 8, Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

About Our Members

ASBA has 65 member school boards consisting of 441 locally-elected trustees.

Collectively, they are responsible for over $7 billion dollars and represent nearly 700,000 students in rural, urban and metro communities.

School board trustees are elected by, and accountable to, the communities they serve.

As part of the general elections, Albertans vote for their school board trustees. A general election takes place once every four years as legislated under the Local Authorities Election Act.

School boards are charged with the responsibility to govern the affairs of the school authority under the Education Act, and are advocates for students to ensure education is given a high priority.

Local Voices, Local Choices

From a community perspective, schools are a foundational component of every community. From a fiscal perspective, every taxpayer in Alberta is connected to our education system. Collaboration between our member boards, as the voice of their communities, and the provincial government plays a vital role in ensuring the success of all students.

When school boards are involved in the decision-making process, we send a powerful message that community voices matter.
