Awards and Recognition

Member school boards and others in the education community were presented with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal as well as ASBA awards and recognition.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (Alberta)

The Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education, presented ASBA’s President Marilyn Dennis and former President Lorrie Jess with the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (Alberta) and certificate. The medal recognizes exceptional qualities and outstanding service to Alberta in the field of public service within the education system. School board trustees and other leaders in the education community were among 7,000 Alberta recipients.

ASBA Fall General Meeting Awards

ASBA’s annual awards evening takes place at the Fall General Meeting (FGM) and recognizes first-year teachers, community partners and member school boards who have made notable contributions to public education in Alberta through engagement, innovation and excellence. In 2022, the following awards and recognition were presented at the FGM:

Edwin Parr Teacher Award

The Edwin Parr Teacher Award honours six outstanding first-year Kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers who have taught in a member school board.

Friends of Education Award

The Friends of Education Award recognizes individuals or organizations who are demonstrably committed to improving education for Alberta students and who have made a significant contribution to education in Alberta.

Community Engagement Award

The Community Engagement Award recognizes school boards that embrace community engagement as a method to inform, involve and gain input from stakeholders on school jurisdiction plans, programs and services.

School Board Innovation and Excellence Award

The School Board Innovation and Excellence Award is sponsored by Xerox Canada Ltd. and recognizes a school board for their role in launching innovative programs and initiatives that enhance student achievement

Outgoing Board of Directors recognition

The Outgoing Directors recognition celebrates outgoing Directors for their commitments and efforts. ASBA benefits immensely from Board members collaborative, innovative and accountable leadership.

Community Engagement Award Recipient

The Community Engagement Award recipient was Grande Yellowhead Public School Division for the “Enrolment Imbalance in Hinton Community Engagement” initiative.

School Board Innovation and Excellence Award recipient

The School Board Innovation and Excellence Award recipient was Battle River School Division for the “Equity in Action” initiative.

Outgoing Board of Directors recognition recipients

The Outgoing Board of Directors’ Recognition was presented to Brad Toone, Daryl Scott, Pamela Rath and Trisha Estabrooks.

Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award

ASBA’s 2023 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award ceremony was held in April at Government House to recognize 12 exceptional First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, selected from 224 nominees. The ceremony included remarks from the Honourable Salma Lakhani, AOE B.Sc., LLD (Hon), Lieutenant Governor of Alberta; the Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education; and, ASBA’s President Marilyn Dennis.

These awards are presented annually to First Nations, Métis or Inuit student nominees who attend a school in Alberta operated by an ASBA member school board. Each recipient is recognized with:

  • An award certificate and congratulatory letter
  • A unique hand-crafted Star Blanket
  • A one-time scholarship, sponsored by Keyera


As a
five-year sponsor of the 2022-2026 awards, Keyera provided a $2,500 scholarship to each student recipient to acknowledge their achievements and support their educational journeys. To this point, the scholarship has been presented to both 2022 and 2023 recipients.
